Frustrated...
G'day guys,
Got a confession to make.....
I haven't touched the camera for quite a while... I did take some photos of some cricket matches a couple of months ago, but got frustrated with the quality of my pics.
Not fired a shot in anger since.
Moon shots ... action shots... can't seem to focus correctly in manual... Camera losing the shot due to lack of the speed of the shot. The old camera would take the shot bang! no questions asked.
Isuppose it's a matter of making time to sit with it and play...

I forgot what kit you have, Al. Might just need to increase your ISO to get the shutter to shoot at the speed you want.

Re: Frustrated...
Mine is a Nikon 5200
It's the actual shot being taken... if that makes sense. I press the button wanting the shot but there is a slight delay before the camera takes the shot. I lost more than 20 very good action pics due to that delay.
Then taking Moon shots.... the focusing .... The only good shots were when I zoomed back out for wider shots.
The old Minolta gave me such good shots....

Re: Frustrated...
Are you using the screen on the back or the viewfinder? Should be no lag with a DSLR via the viewfinder; Live view on the screen, will have some lag, but it is better on true mirrorless cameras like a Fujifilm or Sony. I find digital more forgiving then film (though I learned on film)... digital your free to make mistakes without losing film
Shoot in manual, and dial your settings based on what you need. Shooting action, I am thinking you need 1/800 or 1/1000 shutter speed to freeze the action. Depending on how far you are away from the action, set your aperture to auto and your ISO to auto. Should get you better shots. Full manual will get you better shots... and full manual with fast capable glass will get your great shots. Should be a scale on the camera that you can see that has a zero in the middle and + and - on each end... that is over and under exposed. Try to get her in the middle @ zero and adjust from there. Learn that and you'll get there, mate.

Re: Frustrated...
I'll take it down to the game Saturday arvo and have a play...
Probably around 40 to 50 yards from the action.
Never paid any attention to the scale before.
thanks Tracy

Just don't overthink it and don't be afraid to make mistakes. Be patient and ask yourself what setting should you change. Trial and error and you'll get it right.

Re: Frustrated...
Now it's a time factor ... in that getting the time to spend with it....
It's a bad...busy time being close to Christmas.
Was going to take it down to our local cricket this coming Saturday ... but it's going to be a stinker weather-wise... nearly 40degC.
Glad I'm not playing anymore.
Might still head down for a while...
Cleared the memory cards. Daughter pinched my extreme pro card which I pinched back.
I'll do a workout on the dogs.... yes, got 2 dogs. Whippets... Miniature Greyhounds. Friendly boys... but love to chew!!

Re: Frustrated...
Got a new pup here too (had her almost a full year now)... Here is a photo I took on a nice late spring day about a year and a half ago. One of my daughters good friends playing high school ball.
Futbal by SithTracy, on Flickr
Captured it with a budget Tamron 70-300 lens on a full frame camera. 1/1250th / ISO 500 / F6.3

Re: Frustrated...
Good one.
I'd be using my 55-300 lens
I would also fall into old habits and not take the camera to work and curse when I see a great shot....

Re: Frustrated...
While more of the action shots are improving.... Still get the autofocus (on the action setting) giving me grief at times. I try to set the focus square on the player in the middle of the ground ... The shot comes out with the player out of focus and signs/landscape almost another 50MT behind him in focus..... ggggrrr !!!

Re: Frustrated...
Not sure what the mode is on Nikon, but are you using the AI Servo mode? Track and rapid fire... might work better for you... I use AI Servo, but for me it is just a feeling and I snap.
