Portable HDD question

Hi Guys,
One of my portable HDD's has an issue....
My PC can only see it as a 'local' and won't open it.
However... My WD media player can access and allow me to watch movies from it on the TV...
Am I better off to try a 'format' ? or is it terminal?
It's a Toshiba 'Canvio' 1 TB.....
Any ideas ?
