computer hard to startup... HDD ? Empty computer hard to startup... HDD ?

Post by Alby Sun Dec 22, 2013 2:53 am

Hi guys,
Answer me this please...
I turn on my older computer, it gets to a certain point of the start up and then sits there doing nothing... after a few switch off and ons it fires up and works fine and does everything I ask it to do.
What would cause this ?
My next question is how do I remedy it ?
If it is the HDD on the way out... I recently bought a HDD dual docking station my spare internal drives... is it possible to clone the main HDD within that docking station. I know it has the capacity to do so by way simply pressing a button on it. The cloned HDD... Would it run the same way as the original or does it require passkeys and and codes etc to make it operational ?
Or am I better off simply backing up certain important items on another drive scrapping the 'faulty' one and starting from scratch with a new one and loading Win 8... ?
The machine is 5 or 6 years old with the Vista OS. This is the same machine that had the BSOD issue I asked about a few years ago. It currently resides out in the garage without internet access and has not had that problem since the move.

Hope you can help me as I don't want it have a 'heart attack' and leave me with nothing .

Hi Smile
Try EasyBCD (free).
This will allow you to look at boot menu.
Edit if needed.
Alternative is CCleaner (free)
As well as using the "Cleaner".
Try the "Registry" tab too.

Good one.
Thanks Dave. Pretty sure it's got it. I never had time to do anything to computer as Mandy needed it all everyday and couldn't afford any down time. Now that she''s using Stephs PC , I can give it a bit of TLC... and get a few more years out of it... touch wood.

Had a look on the computer...
All it has is 'Perfect Disc'
That ok ?
It's not hooked up to the net' so it might be my only option.

Al, is this a computer you bought with vista installed on it? If so it should have a recovery program. If so back up the stuff you want to an external drive and then use the recovery option to reload the operating system to it's factory installed condition. I would then suggest connecting to the net and get any and all updates for Vista. Smile

Does not sound like an issue with the drive, but an issue with the boot directory to me.

Hi Joel,
Problem is it was a çopied' version of Vista..

I'm almost ready to start afresh, wipe it clean and put Win 7 on. I just don't want to lose a few of the 'softwares' That are currently on it.
All I'm doing at present is converting my DVDs and storing on various HDDs.
